Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen hopes that local knowledge will aid him this week as the Danish Golf Championship is played at his home course at Furesø Golf Klub.
The young Dane has been a member of this week’s venue since he was a child and was made an Honorary Member last year after he won the HotelPlanner Tour’s Road to Mallorca Rankings.
The 26-year-old, who finished in a share of 12th at his U.S. Open debut at Oakmont earlier this year, faces stiff competition from a local contingent which includes Højgaard twins Nicolai and Rasmus, eight-time DP World Tour winner Thorbjørn Olesen and Niklas Nørgaard, who will defend his Betfred British Masters title next week.
Other home favourites include 15-time DP World Tour winner and victorious 2018 Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjørn, fellow DP World Tour winners Lucas Bjerregaard and Jeff Winther, and 2024 Amateur Champion Jacob Skov Olesen.
Also in the field assembling north of Denmark’s capital Copenhagen are 2018 winner Matt Wallace, who like Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard is making a late push for consideration for Luke Donald’s European Ryder Cup side as Qualification ends next week, defending champion Frederic Lacroix of France and Major Champion Francesco Molinari, who won The Open at Carnoustie, also in 2018.
Player Quotes
Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen: “I started here very young. My earliest memory was with my Dad when I grew up, doing some winter training with the local professional around five or six. Fond memories and I’ve played club championships and that kind of stuff. Looking back over the 15 years, I never thought we’d have a DP World Tour event right here in my back garden. It’s quite special. I can see there being some extra nerves on the first tee tomorrow but then settling into the round and it being business as usual.
“This year with the results I’ve had, there’s more buzz and more interest the couple of times I’ve been here during the year. There are times where I’ve been practicing my putting and people come up and talk and ask questions, say they are following along. It’s new to me, but cool to see the support. It’s also really important that I just enjoy it. You never know if it’s going to happen again, or how long it’s going to be. So just enjoy the atmosphere. It’s not the biggest piece of land and with the forecast we have, there should be a lot of people coming. It’ll feel quite intimate out there. I’ll try and soak it all in and enjoy it.”
Frederic Lacroix: “It feels a little bit like the pressure is off this week because it feels completely new. If it was the same course as last year, it would be different. Except some of the Danish guys, no one has played here before.
“It’s a tight course. You have to put it in play and if you do that you’ll have a lot of chances. It’s not straightforward. A few tricky holes, it’s going to be interesting.
“(In Germany) I have no idea why I played well. I came straight from the Open Qualifier where I wasn’t playing well. It’s a course I like, I’ve done well there before. No practice round and the pressure was off. Here I saw the course yesterday and I’ll play nine again today. We’ll see how it goes.”
Nicolai Højgaard: It has been great being back. This is still three hours from where I live but it still feels like home. I am really looking forward to this week. I think we are in for treat. It is a really good looking golf course, a good field close to Copenhagen.
“I would like to see some consistency in my game. I would love to see some high finishes. In the end we are building for the future, but we are still in the present and want the best out of it right now. To get into the team you need some good golf. The easy answer is that I want to see some good golf but we’ll see. It is in there but we have just got to unlock it when we are on the golf course.”
Rasmus Højgaard: “It’s great. I have been looking forward to it. I think it is nice that we are playing all around the country now. This week in Copenhagen, very much looking forward to it.
“There was good support out there today (during the Pro-Am). It’s not that long ago that we were the kids looking up to the other Danish players. If I can put a little smile on their faces, I’m happy.
“I don’t always look at results as my goals. If I want to achieve a good result I need to do some good stuff until then, gain some small wins each day. That’s more where I get my motivation, get the small wins that accumulate into something bigger. I’ve seen some small wins here and there. I’m in a good mood for this week and looking forward to seeing if I can get some small wins on the course… and then hopefully that turns out to be a big one.”
