Round two report

Freddy Schott enhanced his position at the top of the Frederikshavn Challenge – presented by HESSEL leaderboard by posting a five under par round of 67 on day two at Frederikshavn Golfklub.

The German, who led by one overnight, increased his lead as he reached 12 under par and moved two clear of Portugal’s Vitor Lopes, who is second on ten under after matching rounds of 67 over the first two days.

Schott has five top ten finishes in his last seven starts and is clearly riding the crest of a wave, helped by his relationship with caddie Colin, who has returned to work in Denmark following a two-week break.

“I feel comfortable,” he said. “I have been in the mix for quite a few weeks now so I’m just trying to get it done, but I’m not thinking about that now. It’s just about getting it going again, getting used to Colin again because, it sounds weird, but it changes a little bit. It’s just about getting into it again and I’m enjoying it.

“First of all, he’s a good friend. I see him pretty much every week of the year, maybe not the off weeks, but he’s a good friend first. The good thing about us is we can be friends off the course but then have a professional relationship on the golf course, which helps me a lot. I can be myself a little bit more, I don’t need to be careful with him, it’s more about being professional.”

The 21-year-old has made only one bogey during his first 36 holes and is pleased with his attempts in keeping blemishes off the card, which he believes is not easy to do at Frederikshavn Golfklub.

“My score of five under par was very good, I’m very pleased with that,” he said. “I got it going again, the putter was working nicely and all round, it was a good atmosphere in the group today.

“On this course, you can make bogeys so easily. If you can avoid bogeys, or maybe make one, you can always end up having an okay score, if not a great one.”

Spain’s Manuel Elvira is third on nine under par heading into the weekend, while Danish amateur Frederik Kjettrup shares fourth place with German Nick Bachem and Martin Eriksson, of Sweden, on seven under par.

The second hole witnessed its second hole-in-one of the week when Poland’s Mateusz Gradecki’s eight iron from 175 yards found the bottom of the cup on his way to a two under par round of 70.

Schott now shares the course record, set at 65 on day one, with Sweden’s Simon Forsström and Denmark’s John Axelsen, as both men posted seven under par rounds on day two to jump inside the cut line, which fell at level par.
