Final round report
Jordan Gumberg added a second DP World Tour title to his name on Sunday, claiming the Hainan Classic presented by MAEXTRO.
The American, who only kept his card for this season thanks to a hole-out eagle on the 72nd hole of October’s Genesis Championship in South Korea, held off playing partner Jorge Campillo to record a one-stroke victory at Mission Hills Haikou.
A final round of 70 saw him finish 19 under par and secure wire-to-wire success, two years on from his maiden win at the SDC Championship in March 2024.
Beginning the day with a share of the lead, Gumberg and Campillo both started with birdies, as playing partner Dylan Frittelli made a bogey to immediately fall three shots behind.
Gumberg gave the shot back at the third but then birdied the par-five sixth to return to 18 under. Campillo was briefly ahead again after a birdie at the eighth but then bogeyed the next two.
A four-over-par front nine ended Frittelli’s challenge but Gumberg marched on with a birdie at the 11th, Campillo responding at the next two to cut the gap back to one.
Marcus Armitage picked up a birdie at the 12th, his fourth of the day, to reach 16 under and third place on his own, while Adrian Otaegui set the clubhouse target at 15 under with a bogey-free 64, featuring an eagle at the 12th in addition to six birdies.
Home favourite Wenyi Ding was one shot off the lead after an outward nine of 33, but then made three double-bogeys in four holes to drop back.
Three straight pars for both of the leaders set up a duel over the final three holes and as birdie putts continually refused to drop, their scores remained unchanged as Gumberg safely closed out the win with a well-judged up-and-down at the last.
Emerging talent Yanhan Zhou held his nerve to card a 69 and a share for third, alongside Armitage and Otaegui. The 17-year-old finished as the top-placed Chinese player at 15 under par.
Player quotes
Jordan Gumberg: I don’t have words right now. After last year’s ending of the season, this is amazing. To be standing on the podium again and holding a trophy is unreal, it’s incredible.
Jorge played unbelievably. He was hitting some amazing shots down the stretch, definitely applying the pressure to me. I felt that pressure but we just said, ‘keep doing our own thing, keep our head down and keep going, and it’ll all work out how it’s going to work out and there’s nothing we can do to change that’. So he played unbelievably. And so did Dylan too, he had a rough day today but from the first tee onwards it was pressure and ‘go time’.
Every time I hit a good shot, they hit a good shot. Every time I made a good putt, they made a good putt. So it was a nail-biter to the end, I’m really happy I came out on top but they’re phenomenal players and I expect to see them in this situation very soon.
The first year was kind of me learning the ropes and learning the golf courses, and it took a while. There’s a big learning curve – I mean, these guys are good! Every player in this field is a hell of a player and can win. So you’ve just got to wait for your weeks. I think I’ve matured a bit more, my golf game’s matured a little bit more.
I have my best friend on the bag, Ethan (Marcus), who keeps me in it, and my wife (Luka) as well, every week she’s so, so helpful, being out here and just handling everything that I don’t have to worry about.
Yanhan Zhou: I’m very proud. I never thought I’d come in the top five this week. I just wanted to focus on every shot, every hole, and it was a good result.
I just wanted to do my best, there’s a lot of my friends coming here and family coming here, I just want to do my best and just let it go. They were cheering when I made birdie or I made par, which encouraged me a lot.
When you play outside (of China), for me there’s not a lot of spectators to watch me. For this week, they really encouraged me a lot.
This will give me very much confidence to play well for the next events. I’m very much looking forward to playing the Volvo China Open.
