Tyrrell Hatton is riding the high of European Ryder Cup glory as he arrives in Scotland looking to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship for the fourth time.
The Englishman became the first player to win this event three times in 2023, adding to his previous victories in 2016 and 2017, and he is now targeting more history at St Andrews.
The eight-time DP World Tour winner claimed 3.5 points from four matches against the United States at Bethpage Black in New York last week, and he will be joined by Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre as members of Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team on show in Scotland this week.
Former Ryder Cup player Nicolas Colsaerts will make his 500th DP World Tour appearance after announcing that he will retire from professional golf at the end of the 2025 season, and he returns to the site where he finished runner up to Hatton last year.
The Belgian’s career has spanned across three decades where he has won ten professional titles – three of which have come on the DP World Tour – made 14 Major Championship appearances and was a member of the famous Miracle at Medinah in the 2012 Ryder Cup.
Ten Major Champions will also tee it up this week, including Fitzpatrick, Patrick Reed, Cam Smith, Danny Willett, Pádraig Harrington, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Louis Oosthuizen and Brooks Koepka.
This is the 24th edition of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a unique event which incorporates an individual Professional Championship for the world’s leading golfers and the Team Championship, in which the pros are paired with amateur players.
The tournament is a celebration of links golf and is staged over three world-famous courses; the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links and Kingsbarns. Alfred Dunhill’s commitment to golf in St Andrews dates back 40 years to the first Alfred Dunhill Cup played in 1985 and they are the longest standing title partner in the DP World Tour’s history, with the Dunhill Links taking over the international event in 2001.
Player Quotes:
Tyrrell Hatton: It’s a quick change like back in some ways back to reality. Obviously last week was a very special week but now my focus is trying to defend this title. I have some time off after this week and I think that’s when I’ll have the time to reflect on how amazing the Ryder Cup was.
I’ve managed to play some great golf over the years at this event. I think maybe the slightly relaxed atmosphere this week helps me a little bit. Maybe that has something to do it with it.
Last year, it was the first time I had actually won a tournament with my dad here. So that was really special and he had a front row seat, which is pretty cool. He’s been my coach since I was basically ten years old. We’ve achieved a lot together, and that’s really special.
Nicolas Colsaerts: To set a milestone like that at the Home of Golf, I think anyone would feel grateful. I’ve been looking at this for a couple years now, and when I was looking at the numbers and everything, I realized that it was going to be a possibility that I’m extremely grateful for.
25 years is a long time. Yes, I’ll be the first one to admit it, I could have done a lot better. I could have probably won about ten or 15 times on tour; I had what was required. But trust me, I had a lot of fun those last 25 years as well. I look back with not as much regret as a lot of people might think.
Tommy Fleetwood: It is something that stays with you forever (Ryder Cup win). I’m so happy for us all as a team that we did with a people – I don’t know whether people thought it couldn’t be done but everybody thought it was going to be really difficult, which it was in the end but very satisfying for us all to get it done.
I love the courses this week. I’ve played them for a long time so it’s a really nice environment for me. I know a lot of people here and I have a lot of friends that come to this event every year.
I’m nowhere near Tyrrell’s stature at the Dunhill. It’s like a gimmie for him when he comes around. I always love playing here, and the courses, I played well at Carnoustie. I’ve played well at all of them at different times. I enjoy the event. I’d love to win one. That’s what I’d really like but I’ve not managed to do that yet.
Matt Fitzpatrick: It’s always great to be back in St Andrews for this week. It’s a different week to regular tournament golf with the team format and I’ll be playing with my dad this year so it should be a special wee
