Round Four Report

Thriston Lawrence claimed his second DP World Tour title of the season after beating Matt Wallace in a play-off at the Omega European Masters.

The South African began the day with a three-shot lead but was caught at the summit after 16 holes by a charging Wallace at Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre.

With Wallace unable to save par at the first extra hole, a four was good enough to hand Lawrence victory on his maiden visit to Crans Montana, sparking jubilant scenes on the 18th green.

The 25-year-old, who was the first winner of the DP World Tour era at the Joburg Open in November after that event was reduced to 36 holes, made four birdies, a double bogey and a bogey on Sunday to sign for a closing 69.

Wallace, meanwhile, posted a bogey-free 66 to finish two shots ahead of fellow Englishman Richard Mansell in third on 16 under par. Frenchman Antoine Rozner, Spain’s Jorge Campillo and Scott Jamieson of Scotland were then a shot further back.
Player Quotes

Thriston Lawrence: All of the history around this tournament, looking at Seve there twice, 1977, 78, I wasn’t even born yet. Just crazy to see the history around this tournament. It’s my first time here and its probably one of my favourite weeks. Definitely coming back, it’s been amazing.

A lot of talk after the Joburg Open, only winning a tournament over 36 holes. I think I’ve proved myself even before this win, having six top tens. Not a lot of missed cuts. It’s a little extra having a four round victory, hopefully many more to come.

Even before the play-off it started off crazy. Matt chipped in on one, Richard chipped in on three, I chipped in on nine. It was a lot of drama. The crowd were behind all three of us, they were unbelievable. Got to 17 tee box ties for the lead. I felt like I was playing well enough to have a couple of shot lead. In regulation, on 18 I wasn’t nervous until I got to the green and Matt hit an unbelievable putt from the front edge, got me a little nervous. I left myself with a three footer. Putting is not always my strength so just had to dig deep.

A play-off is like a match play feeling. I’m quite confident in match-play. It’s a whole different game, you can plan better because you know it’s only against the guy next to you, so I was a little calmer. Hit it inside him on 18, unfortunate for him to miss his second putt, would have been a nice finish to have a few more holes for the crowd, but I don’t think I was capable of doing another hole. Just so pleased to get it done.
