Final Report
Yannik Paul claimed his maiden DP World Tour title in dramatic fashion after the German holed a 15-foot birdie putt at the final hole to be crowned the 2022 Mallorca Golf Open champion.
It was a day of high drama in breezy conditions at Son Muntaner Golf Club, where Paul had shared the overnight lead with New Zealand’s Ryan Fox. While numerous players jostled and moved in and out of contention, the 28-year-old stood firm at the top of the leaderboard.
He led or shared the lead for the majority of the day, until his playing partner Marcus Armitage birdied the 15th hole to edge ahead. The Englishman, however, proceded to drop four shots in the final three holes.
By the time Paul stood on the 18th tee, his German compatriot Nicolai von Dellingshausen and Englishman Paul Waring had posted a clubhouse target of 14 under par. A birdie was required, and the 2021 Challenge Tour graduate duly obliged, holing his birdie putt on the 72nd hole from the fringe to sign off with a final round 72 and a 15 under winning total.
The win, which came in just his 26th appearance, made him the fastest German player to win on the Tour and moved him to 20th in the DP World Tour Rankings in partnership with Rolex. Von Dellingshausen, meanwhile, received some consolation as his tied runner up finish meant he will retain his Tour card for the 2023 season.
Player quotes
Yannick Paul: “It was really hard today, my ball-striking was unbelievable all week, hit it really close on the first couple of holes and couldn’t make any putts so it was really hard to stay in moment but luckily the other guys didn’t make many putts either.
“I saw after nine holes that I was in the lead by one shot and then Marcus made a great shot on 15, and holes a great putt, so I was two shots back there and I thought it’s going to be close now. Unfortunately Marcus hit a couple of bad shots, but I couldn’t have dreamed for anything better in the end.
“On hole 11 we had to wait a long time and I was getting pretty nervous and I just tried to stay in the moment and focus on my breathing. The first time you have a lead it’s hard to do that. I just tried my hardest and Ollie did an amazing job on the bag, we just fought to the end.
“I had a lot of really good chances the last couple of days but to finish like this is a dream come true, it couldn’t be any better. I’m just so happy, honestly, my girlfriend and I just worked a lot on my mental side, we were dreaming that she could be there for my first win and she was here now so it’s unbelievable.”
Nicolai von Dellingshausen: “Honestly I’m lost for words right now. It’s been an up and down season for me, but I knew I was going in the right direction and working on the right things. In this sport results don’t always show up when you want them so I had to keep my patience high.
“It paid off now, I think I’ve secured my card with this for sure. That was my main goal going into this week and now I’ve achieved it so I’m super happy.
“I did a very good job the first three days just playing shot for shot, not looking at scores too much. Of course I’m aware of the position I’m in and the situation I’m in on the Rankings, but I’m super proud of how I dealt with those things. It was a lot harder for me not to look at the leaderboards today so I was super-aware of everything.
“I didn’t know that putt was to tie the lead because the last time I had checked it was 15 under, I didn’t know it was potentially for a play-off, I just knew it was to secure my card so I’m happy for that.”
Paul Waring: “I’ve been playing great all week to be honest with you, I just didn’t hole any putts in the first few days. I trusted myself to keep swinging it well, keep hitting the golf shots when I needed to. I felt really relaxed out there, I really enjoyed it, my caddie kept me relaxed the whole way through. I had that mentality to keep going and I holed some putts towards the end to keep the momentum going.
“It’s been a funny year really. I was in a safety net category so I haven’t played that much this season. So goal number one was to get my card back, which I did after finishing second at Hillside. Anything beyond that has been a bit of a bonus for me and I’ve just been taking it week by week and I’ve been enjoying my golf again, and we can see that from how I’ve been playing the last few weeks.”
