Round Four Report:
Germany’s Velten Meyer shot a superb Sunday 65 to clinch his maiden Challenge Tour win in emphatic fashion at the Vierumäki Finnish Challenge.

The 27-year-old, who shared the overnight lead with compatriot Marc Hammer, started with an eagle on the first hole and never looked back as he carded a bogey-free round seven under par final round to seal a five-stroke triumph, courtesy of a 26-under total.

Meyer’s impressively calm performance belied the fact he was playing in a leading group on the final day for the first time on the Challenge Tour.

“It feels amazing” he said.  “Obviously I’m very happy to come out on top. I think it can open a lot of doors, we play on the Challenge Tour to move up to the DP World Tour and this is a great help for my rankings.”

“At the end of the day it is just another round of golf and either you are going to play well or not and thankfully I played well today.”

Meyer revealed afterwards that a recent pep-talk from his mother had set him on the course to victory.

“Last week in Ireland I started with a 77, then shot 66 second round” he said.  My mum called me this week and she was like why don’t you basically do what you did in the second round in Ireland? I said it is not that easy!”

“But she was just saying why don’t you think back to that round and have the same mindset and I tried to do that this week, I guess it worked!”

The German will play on the DP World Tour next week as he looks to use his maiden victory as a springboard to further success.

“I don’t have much time to celebrate to be honest. I’m going to carry on tomorrow, go over to Northern Ireland (for the ISPS Handa World Invitational) and play over there.  The season is ending somewhat soon, so there is not much time for rest.”

Hammer birdied the last to finish alone in second on 21-under par, whilst Ireland’s John Murphy and Gudmundur Kristjansson were a further shot back in tied third.

The Road to Mallorca moves to Denmark next week as the Scandinavian Swing continues at the Frederikshavn Challenge – Presented by HESSEL.
