Buncrana Golf Club – A Historic Links Course on the Wild Atlantic Way
Situated at the entrance to Buncrana on the beautiful Inishowen Peninsula, overlooking Lough Swilly and the White Strand, Buncrana Golf Club offers a unique golfing experience combining history, natural beauty and a challenging links course.
Records indicate that golf has been played in Buncrana since the early 1800s, and the club’s committee is currently researching its fascinating history. This heritage supports the club’s claim to being the oldest nine-hole links golf club in Ireland.
In 1944, the property was placed in the trust of the Buncrana Municipal Golf Committee to provide golfing facilities for the local community. Since then, the club has undergone significant development, including a new clubhouse and the addition of two holes, increasing the course par from 62 to 66.
One of the course’s standout features is its magnificent 596-yard par-five hole, proudly regarded by the club as the longest par five along the Wild Atlantic Way. It provides a genuine challenge for golfers of all abilities.
In 1995, the club adopted the name Buncrana Golf Club. Today, its members and committee take responsibility for maintaining and developing the course, continuing a proud tradition of community involvement and making golf accessible to local players and visitors alike.
