Ayrshire golf resort Dundonald Links has launched a new range of whisky flights to celebrate World Whisky Day, including the incredibly rare 1980 Canasta from premium distillery Bunnahabhain.

Synonymous with Scotland, whisky has also been ever-present in golfing history, leading to the creation of the resort’s whisky room inside the new clubhouse in 2021. The selection was curated by respected whisky consultant Blair Bowman – founder of World Whisky Day – and features over 100 whiskies, including a number of authentic Scotch distilled on local shores.

One of the collection’s crown jewels is a cask of Dundonald Links 1980 Bunnahabhain Canasta whisky, aged for over 14,000 days. The resort collaborated with master distiller Brendan McCarron to bring the cask to Ayrshire and fill it with the last of the rare whisky. Now held in the clubhouse, guests are given the unique opportunity to pour a dram straight from the cask.

Dundonald Links’ whisky flights are traditional tasting sessions that give guests the chance to try an eclectic range of varieties from across the globe. Similar to a wine-tasting experience, guests are taken through the fundamentals of whisky etiquette and can compare a vast range of samples.

The whisky flight menu at resort restaurant the Canny Crow gives guests 22 experiences to choose from, with prices starting at £50.

Launching in 2012, World Whisky Day falls on the third Saturday in May each year. The day is a celebration of every variety of whisky that aims to introduce more people to the ‘water of life’, with events around the globe.

Ian Ferguson, general manager at Dundonald Links, said: “It is impossible not to associate whisky with Scottish heritage, and we take pride in having such a high-quality collection at the resort. Of course, we are especially excited to have a cask of Dundonald Links 1980 Bunnahabhain Canasta – a whisky you really have to taste.”

“We welcome everyone to our flights, from whisky aficionados to complete newcomers. Dundonald Links is the perfect place for anyone to come and try some of the finest whiskies you’ll find anywhere.”

A popular part of Ayrshire’s golf coast for 20 years, Dundonald features a Kyle Phillips-designed layout with all the hallmarks of a classic links course. The venue hosted the Trust Golf Women’s Scottish Open in 2022 and are poised to stage the event again in 2023 alongside final qualifying for the Open Championship. Guests can visit for the day or stay in the resort’s luxury accommodation, with freshly-cooked food available from the Canny Crow restaurant.
