Round Three Report

Xander Schauffele will take a two-shot lead into the final round of the 2022 Genesis Scottish Open after carding a brilliant 66 on day three at The Renaissance Club.

The American started the day four shots off the lead but three birdies put him in a share of the lead and when he picked up another three gains in four holes from the 13th, he led by four.

A bogey-bogey finish took some of the gloss off his round but Schauffele will head into day four at seven under as he looks for a first Rolex Series win.

The reigning Olympic Champion arrived in Scotland as a man in form having won on his last start on the PGA TOUR at the Travelers Championship after a run of four consecutive top-20 finishes.

He finished fifth in the DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex in 2018 - the same year he won his only DP World Tour title at the WGC-HSBC Champions - and now he is looking to make history as the winner of the first event co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR.

Rafa Cabrera Bello is already a Rolex Series champion having won this event in 2017 and he was the closest challenger at five under, a shot clear of England's Jordan Smith and American duo Ryan Palmer and Jordan Spieth.

Player Quotes

Xander Schauffele: "I had pretty much everything going. I was judging the bounces well and making sort of the putts I need to and getting up-and-down when I was missing the green. Six birdies through 16, no complaints, and a tough finish.

"I'll go to the range, get some better feels going into tomorrow but those are hard finishing holes. So overall, pretty okay with the day.

"I don't want to think too far ahead but it would be very nice. It would be very special. It just proves that the game can travel, and beating an incredible field, one of the best of the year. I'm just going to focus on what I can do now and not get too carried away."

Rafa Cabrera Bello: "I shot one-over on the front nine, which I didn't feel was bad. I birdied 10 to get back to level par. I hit a really good shot in and then made the putt for eagle. So I'm like, okay, that was a bonus. And then, I don't know, I just really ripped the next drive and hit an amazing shot and then rolled two really good putts after.

"It is great. You always try to generate momentum. It's not always possible. You for sure need a couple putts to drop, and that happened. Maybe that putt on 10 doesn't drop, but today it did and I'm very pleased that I put myself in contention for tomorrow.

"It would be double good, I guess (winning this title for a second time). Of course always winning is a dream. I've been lucky enough to have won here before. I always want to win, if not the Home of Golf, the country where golf was invented playing links golf and with beautiful, sunny and windy conditions, it just makes it even more fun."

Jordan Spieth: "Yeah, I had to think. I guess my open was in England, so it wasn't in Scotland. I think links golf is arguably my favourite kind of golf and I don't know of any country that has more fantastic links courses than Scotland, obviously being the Home of Golf. Rich history. It is the history in golf.

"It would be meaningful to win Scotland's National Championship, but the fact that it's now a co-sanctioned DP World Tour, PGA TOUR and Rolex Series Event, I think I just mentioned it earlier, having said that, it seems like it's one of the biggest international events of the year.

"I'm just happy to be in position. Certainly a lot better position than I was when I finished yesterday's round."

Ryan Palmer: "Really good day. Played really solid golf. Hit a lot of nice shots. I feel like I left two or three for sure on the back nine, some putts I had coming in, one on 15, parred 16, hit a short been on 13 and of course unfortunate horseshoe on the last. Stay within myself.

"My Saturdays haven't been great as of late so told myself coming in, stay patient, stay calm and let's change our strategy on Saturdays maybe and just play better golf. All in all, a good day.

"I grew up in rural Texas, flat, a lot of wind, so I learned to hit a lot of creative shots, low shots. I love coming over here. Love playing this golf course. Great week last year. I just love this golf because there's so many shots you can hit. You have to really be creative. It's a good feeling when I get here, and that's what I've enjoyed the most playing The Renaissance Club and I'm excited for tomorrow."

Jordan Smith: "Very happy. It's not been easy the last few days. Yeah, just really happy the way I've stuck in there. A few loose shots but you're going to get in those sort of condition, so really happy.

"You're going to get bad breaks, and you're going to get stuck up against the lip of a pot bunker and you're going to find some weed in the grass. You just have to stay patient and take breaks as they come. You're going to get bad bounces.

"It was awesome playing with him (Xander) to be honest. It was a pleasure to watch him rip it up. Yeah, he's someone that I've looked at, his putting, he looks really good over the ball. He's a good guy, good chatting the way around. It was really nice."

Round Three Partial Report

Max McGreevy holds a one stroke lead at the Barbasol Championship after playing just three holes of the third round following extensive rain delays in Kentucky.

The second round of the tournament was completed on Saturday morning as Friday's afternoon tee times were delayed by five and a half hours due to fog and lightning. The third round was suspended for four and a half hours on Saturday afternoon due to more than two and a half inches of rain in Nicholasville.

Matti Schmid, the 2021 DP World Tour Rookie of the Year, shared the lead on 16 under par with McGreevy at the conclusion of the second round after they both carded nine under par rounds of 63.

Both Schmid and McGreevy birdied the first hole of their third rounds after teeing off at 8:00pm, but the German dropped a shot on the second hole and now shares second place with Canada's Adam Svensson.

One stroke further back is 2015 Challenge Tour Number One Ricardo Gouveia on 15 under par, who has also played three holes of his third round.

In a share of fifth on 14 under are the American trio of Trey Mullinax, Sean O'Hair and Kevin Streelman.

The third round is scheduled to resume at 7:45am on Sunday after play was suspended at 9:02pm on Saturday evening.

The winner of the Barbasol Championship will receive exemptions on both the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR, as well as the final spot at The 150th Open at St Andrews next week through The Open Qualifying Series.

Round Three Report

Matti Schmid will take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the Barbasol Championship as he goes in search of his first professional victory.

The German, who turned pro after finishing as low amateur at The 149th Open at Royal St George's last year, followed up his second round 63 at Keene Trace Golf Club with a six under par 66, reaching a 22 under par total.

After a four-and-a-half hour rain delay on Saturday, the 24-year-old birdied the first hole and dropped a stroke on the second, completing just three holes of his third round before play was suspended due to darkness in Kentucky. He parred his first three holes after returning to the course on Sunday morning, and then made five gains in a row from the seventh hole.

His seventh birdie of the round followed and the two-time European Amateur Champion recovered from a bogey on the 17th with a birdie on the 18th to pull two strokes clear.

Schmid's compatriot Hurly Long is in hot pursuit after carding ten birdies to sign for a nine under par third round of 63. The 26-year-old's last professional win came at the 2020 Italian Challenge Open Eneos Motor Oil on the European Challenge Tour.

In a share of third on 19 under par are the American pair of Trey Mullinax and Kevin Streelman, and on 18 under are Sean O'Hair, of the United States, and Canadian Adam Svensson.

The fourth round began at 10:40am local time, with the final group teeing off at 12:50pm. There has been no redraw for the final round.

The winner of the Barbasol Championship will receive exemptions on both the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR and will also earn the final place at The 150th Open at St Andrews through The Open Qualifying Series.

Player Quotes

Matti Schmid: "I hung in there this morning. I got off to a pretty good start, especially around the turn and I played well coming in. The body is feeling pretty good so far.

"It was really good to get some momentum because I didn't get off to a great start yesterday but going into the (fourth) round like this is huge - especially for confidence. The course is still playing soft and is pretty gettable, so I've got to make birdies.

Hurly Long: "I'm very happy with that. I played quite well and made some putts. It was a long day yesterday, a long day before, and a long day today but it has been fun so far.

"I'm just going to control what I can control. I'm going to go out and play as well as I can and we'll see what happens.

"I've played consistently the last few months but not too many low (rounds). I had a few at the beginning of the year, but it's nice to get out there and make some birdies.
